by Mathaveswarry Sree Narayanan on May 21, 2026 at 11:07 am

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15, 2026 - The Malaysian economy recorded a moderate expansion in the first quarter of 2026, driven largely by a rebound in the export sector which helped offset a noticeable slowdown in domestic spending and private investment. According to the latest data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 5.4% year-on-year for the first three months of the year. While this figure slightly outperformed the 5.3% median estimate projected by economists, it marked a significant cooling from the 6.2% growth rate seen in the final quarter of 2025.
