Former Minister Remanded Following Tabung Haji RCI Findings

by Madhavii on September 7, 2026 at 3:50 am

KUALA LUMPUR: A former minister appeared in magistrate's court today for remand after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) launched an investigation based on findings from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH).The suspect, a man in his 60s, showed up around 10:26am in an orange lock-up outfit. MACC officers picked him up at 4:30pm yesterday after he dropped by their headquarters to give a statement about hotel leases in Saudi Arabia.According to The Star, the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 for soliciting or receiving gratification as an inducement or reward. The offense carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of at least five times the gratification amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction under Section 24 of the same act. The arrest is part of a wider sweep involving former TH leaders and corporate figures named in the inquiry report. A total of 18 people have been arrested and 245 witnesses called as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigates 14 cases linked to the inquiry, according to NST.MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said the 14 investigation papers comprised six cases directly referred to the MACC following the inquiry report and another eight issues identified independently by the commission."Overall, through the 14 investigation papers opened by our special investigation team and Special Operations Division, 18 individuals have been arrested and 11 have been remanded," he said at a press conference here today. On August 27, a former TH chairman and a former Treasury secretary‑general were held for seven days to help with investigations. Earlier, a former TH CEO was also remanded, and seven more people were detained in separate probes.According to NST, the inquiry report, which wrapped up in 2022 after looking into TH’s management and operations from 2014 to 2020, was finally made public on July 29. The report exposed huge gaps in TH's management and financial choices. One of the biggest takeaways was that TH should have posted a RM1.4 billion loss in 2017 but instead reported a RM3.4 billion profit. On top of that, hibah payouts were made between 2014 and 2017 even though the organization's liabilities were greater than its assets. The inquiry report put forward 25 key recommendations, including a major governance overhaul, tighter board appointment criteria, barring active politicians from the board, forensic audits of questionable investments, and clearer separation of responsibility for haj affairs and financial management.Photo: The Star
